Airlines
French praise
Kamal Sengupta, General Manager, Commercial Air France, says that it was the team that backed her up. Vikram Vittal, Manager Communications, Air France, who was part of the team, passes the buck right back and says that without inspired le adership, nothing can be done.

Consumer Notes
Some gain, many lose
Mupirocin ointment USP, is a tiny tube of ointment sold under the brand name, Mupirax. This 5-gram tube is sold at Rs 61. While the generic medicine or drug that helps to cure the problem in this medication is only 2 per cent of the total volume, the rest is petroleum jelly.

Corporate
Awake and alert
I liked the ``Is your building thinking'' article in Life dated May 28, 2001. The concept of working in a building which is ``awake and alert'' is not a novelty in the West. But it is something relatively rare in India and worth building on.

The pink slip and beyond
Boom, bust, crash, help! No, that's not the latest MTV line, it's the IT tale summed up. If last year was the annus horribilis for the dotcoms, it has caught up this year with a good part of the infotech segment.

An antidote to stress
Madhabi Banerji had a stressful job for nearly two decades. Running a travel agency along with her elder sister Sujata Mohapatra in a fiercely competitive market was gradually taking its toll and the sisters were finding it difficult to cope.

Environment
Save Kodaikanal
Susheela Nair in her article `` Quaint and charming (June 4, 2001) informs us that Matheran has effected a total ban on automobile traffic. This is great news and how I wish other hill stations would also follow its example.

Health

It's healthy and tasty
High above the city's skyline, the view is breathtakingly beautiful as the night settles and a thousand twinkling lights come on. At a roof top restaurant in a five star hotel everything is in place for an evening of fine dining.

Face to face, with oneself
In a moving narrative, guru of resilience Roger Crawford, physically challenged -- an artificial leg, a foot with three toes, and underdeveloped hands -- writes in his book ``How High Can You Bounce?'' about how he discovered self-acceptanc e.

Management
Inspiring writing
I am a regular reader of Business Line and read with interest Poru Munshi's article ``Living with fear'' (April 9). I was indeed impressed by it and found it to be an eye-opener of sorts. Being a student of Business Management,

Miscellaneous
Correcting behaviour
This is with reference to the article ``On one's best behaviour''(May 5) by Porus Munshi. It was illuminating and most useful for some of us who want to work on developing good behaviour and succeeding in one's career and life.

An eye-opener
I read with interest Porus Munshi's article, Defeating entropy, on May 21. I must say that it was an eyeopener. I liked the way you have correlated life, science and development.

Far from trash
I liked the article ``Time to trash injustice'' (May 28) by Meena Menon. It's nice to know that there are people who think about the garbage collectors. I thank you for publishing articles such as these.

Hard work pays
When Niret Alva won the Panda award for Living on the Edge in 1996, one of the highest international awards an environment series can hope to receive, there were people who said his mother, Margaret Alva, had used her political influence to help him win it. There were just two problems with this contention: one, that it would be slightly difficult for an Indian politician to be able to organise an international award, and two, as Niret points out, ``When it comes to television, y our work is your calling card. Ultimately, whatever your connections might be, if you do a shoddy job, it is going to show''.

Luring back the young
It was interesting to note that the young are still thinking in terms of a career in civil services (Chance to serve the country, June 4). However, it is there for everybody to see that what was once a prestige posting is no longer attracting the bes t talent -- they are all going the software way and preferably to alien shores, for that is where the big money is.

Kids' day out
Kids never had it this good. If you have the resources, there is almost nothing you cannot buy in the country. In fact the list of branded toys and articles for kids is increasing by the day. And the latest on the firmament is Kidz Station in New Delhi, a replication of the same kind of children's retail store in Jakarta. On the expansion plan are eight more in the country.

A brush with silver
Flashback to hundred years ago -- a small shop in Peshawar Cantonment supplied silverware to the European army units stationed in India.

Travel & Places

And the Ganga flows on
If you are among those who wish to revisit the very popular destinations of Haridwar and Rishikesh, do not forget to pack some of your old memories into your suitcases. There was a time when these were places which inspired peace and tranquility, a certa in rustic innocence made all the more endearing by an uncertain wish to develop.

Chail chalo
Ten years ago, when I first set foot in Shimla to escape the heat and dust of Delhi, I was surprised to see the place packed with people. The surprise turned to shock when every third person turned out to be a known Delhiwala and the mall road gave the impression of being one of the crowded lanes of Chandni Chowk. I beat a hasty retreat to nearby Naldhera and Kufri to enjoy the solitude. I promised never to return. On my return to Delhi, a friend suggested that I visit Chail, a secl uded and peaceful place close to Shimla.
