HEC develops special magnet

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, Jan. 27

THE State-owned Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) has manufactured a cyclotron magnet, which will be of great use for research projects in nuclear physics.

The K-500 super-conducting magnet, constructed for the Department of Atomic Energy, was recently handed over to Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary in the DAE.

The magnet will be used at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre here. According to a HEC source, the magnet is energised by a liquid helium-cooled super-conducting cyclotron, which is claimed to be the first of its kind in the country and is on a par with developments on the international scene. It is presumed that HEC's achievement will add further to India's scientific status among developing nations.

The detailed design and drawing of, and technology for, the manufacture of this cyclotron magnet was indigenously developed by the HEC, the high-quality forgings required for the magnet being also made in-house. Earlier, in 1977, the HEC had manufactured and supplied a 224 cm cyclotron magnet, which is still giving good service.
