Escotel offers passport facility

Our Bureau

KOCHI: Escotel subscribers in Kerala will now be able to check the status of their passport applications through SMS following a tie-up with the Regional Passport Offices in the State.

Escotel subscribers would no longer be required to stand in long queues waiting for their turns and would get the latest status of their passport application directly on their mobile, an official press release here said. The information would be available to the Escotel subscribers without any extra charge, at the cost of a normal SMS, it said.

The number of passport applications in Kerala is one of the highest in the country and the applications are from far flung areas of the State, it said. ``Majority of households in Kerala have relatives in the Middle East countries which results in lot of travelling. Keeping this in mind, Escotel is envisaging a huge potential for this service,'' Mr V.G. Somasekhar, Chief Operating Officer, Escotel, Kerala said.

The customers, he said, would have to send a keyword as an SMS to 333 and the keyword would be different for each passport office. Escotel's connectivity with the central server at Bangalore would then process the request and the reply would then be forwarded to the customer, he added.
