Our Bureau

THE Karnataka Government is trying to take concrete steps to address the problems arising out of scanty rainfall, according to the State Agriculture Minister, Mr V.S. Koujalgi.

According to a press release issued here, Mr Koujalgi, who was in Bantwal to inaugurate a district-level seminar on agriculture, said that the Department of Watershed Development was implementing several programmes in the drought-affected taluks of the State and the farmers in such areas were being guided by the Department of Agriculture on the possibility of shifting to crops which do not need much water.

Moreover, the State Government is also implementing an insurance scheme for farmers, which is expected to give them some support.

Last year, about 6.11 lakh farmers were covered under this scheme for a total amount of Rs 132 crore, Mr Koujalgi said.
