NEW DELHI, Dec. 12
THE Government said on Thursday that its decision to close down the state-owned Hindustan Fertiliser Corporation (HFC) and Fertiliser Corporation of India (FCI) would have no impact on the availability of urea in those States where they are located.
The Minister for Fertilisers, Mr Sukhdev Dhindsa, told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that FCI and HFC had been making losses since inception. The accumulated losses of FCI as on March 31, 2002 were Rs 7,921 crore and that of HFC Rs 6,725.88 crore. The Government has so far extended Plan and non-Plan support including equity to these companies amounting to Rs 3,042.28 crore and Rs 2,273.75 crore respectively up to March 31, 2002.
Mr Dhindsa said that thus production or non-production of urea by units of FCI and HFC had no significant impact on the availability of fertilisers in the country.
Besides, from 2005-06 onwards, 16.52 lakh tonne of urea from Oman-India fertiliser company is expected to become available which the Government is committed to buy back on a pre-determined long-term fixed price.
Further, the expansion of Kribhco at Hazira and RCF at Thal are also under consideration.
