AP State gears for cyber policing — CM opens crime analysis lab

WITH the convergence era demanding new methods of policing, the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL) here has established the State's first computer crime analysis lab to tackle new era computer-based attacks and problems.

APFSL is also in advanced stage of signing a memorandum of understating with E2-Labs, the local franchisee of Verisign Inc, to undertake computer security training, testing and providing computer crime preventive solutions to companies in the State. Verisign is the world's leading computer security company.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, who inaugurated this new facility on Monday, said that with increased proliferation and use of information technology there were inherent dangers of increase in cyber crimes. Therefore, the police set-up has to gear up to address cyber related crimes with latest technologies.

The computer crime lab in APFSL can deal with computer crimes ranging from frauds related to accounts, hacking diversion of funds through electronic transfer, theft of intellectual property, email spamming and virus related attacks.

Further, it has trained the police to handle computer abuse covering unauthorised reproduction of counterfeit currency, printing of visas, fake degree certificates, cyber pornography and cyber terrorism. APFSL Lab was entrusted the task of uncovering a series of cases involving defamation of character, business rivalry and use of computers for unauthorised conversion of information.

The State police, with the support of this latest computer crime lab is now in a position to track down cyber criminals no matter which part of the globe they live in and commit the crime.

During the year about 30 computer frauds cases were reported in the state and half of them have been referred to the APFSL for analysis, Mr K.P.C. Gandhi, Director of APFSL.

APFSL is currently handling cases referred to it from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and the CBI.
