Bangalore , July 31

THE collection of income tax in Karnataka & Goa region increased by 32 per cent at Rs 5,524 crore during 2002-03 compared to the previous year.

"We are the third highest in the country in terms of collection," the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mr B.L. Rao, told newspersons here. He said the department had given out Rs 1,125 crore as refunds during 2002-03, which was higher than the previous year.

Arrears went up by 20 per cent during the period. "The rise in arrears was largely because of increase of raising of demand during 2002-03," he said.

Mr Rao said there were a total of 80.66 lakh tax payers in Karnataka & Goa and the total number of PAN (personal account number) allotted in the region was around 16 lakh.

He said around 3 lakh tax payers had not applied for PAN so far. Under on-the-spot-card scheme, a total number of 2,156 cards were delivered while the total number of new allotments made since July 15 was 535.

Mr Rao said since July 15, the Income Tax Department has launched an interactive voice response system for queries regarding PAN.

The taxpayers can know their PAN by dialing 080-2351481. Besides this facility, the taxpayers can access the Web site,, to know the status of their PAN.

The Commissioner of Income Tax, Computers, Ms Vatsala Subramoni, said around 70,000 PAN cards are in the process of being delivered.

She said during 2001-02, a total of 13.36 lakh PAN cards were allotted.

The Income Tax Department has also introduced a new interactive system, Sampark, on the Web site, which allows income tax payers to prepare their return of income for assessment year 2003-04.

The taxpayers can then download the completed form and file it with the Department.

Mr Rao said those tax payers who already have PAN cards can apply for the new card which is tamper-proof by paying Rs 60 as fee.

To improve PAN related services, the Income Tax Department has authorised UTI Investor services Ltd to set up and manage IT PAN service centres in all cities and towns where there is an income tax office.
