Hyderabad , Aug. 1

IN the backdrop of heightened competition and the country having amongst the highest certified players in software and call centre/BPO players, the Asian leg of Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG) conference, focussing on excellence and business process improvement, has laid special thrust on building quality frameworks that will make corporations globally competitive.

The Executive Director of QAI India, Mr Navyug Mohnot, said for Indian IT and ITES companies to maintain their edge in the global arena, it is important they constantly keep abreast of the quality curve.

"The way things are shaping up, we could soon have quality benchmarks even in e-Governance projects," he said.

"The IT industry in India since inception focused on quality initiatives. Proof of that is today India has more SEI CMM certified companies than any other country in the world and they are now moving to CMMI. Even the ITES industry has maintained an astute focus on quality and today India has the fastest adoption of certification amongst its third party call centres and BPO players in the world," Mr Mohnot said.

Supported by the Andhra Pradesh Government, this two-day conference has brought together practitioners from the industry, academia and the Government to share ideas and learning in areas of software process improvements. The Managing Director of Avraham Y. Goldratt Institute, Dr Eric De Smet, speaking on "How to maximise RoI of IT projects — Now and in the Future" said all corporations need to adopt a meticulous three-pronged approach to ensure quality covering the objectives of the IT policy, measurement systems used to justify the IT projects and importantly execution of the project.

The President and Chief Executive Officer of Covansys, Mr Subramaniam, said more and more employers were treating employees as assets rather than expenses. The key issues relating to people processes are selection, retention and build excellence through quality practices. The PCMM (people capability maturity model) is the appropriate framework to achieve this, he said.

The President of Hyderabad Software Exporters Association and MD of ADP Wilco, Mr Shakti Sagar, said about 25 per cent of software services companies have embarked on quality related certification processes and the increased awareness among them to be competitive has seen more number of companies taking to quality practices. Culture of quality is in the air now, he said.
