Kochi to host symposium on prawn culture

THE College of Fisheries of the Kerala Agricultural University is organising an international symposium, Freshwater Prawns 2003, in Kochi from August 21 to 23.

The keynote address to the symposium will be delivered by Mr Michael New, President of the European Aquaculture Society. Papers on the production possibilities and potentials of freshwater prawns will be presented by scientists from Brazil, China, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Vietnam, apart from those from India.

Status papers on freshwater prawn farming in the various States of India will be presented. Papers on aquaculture, biology and capture fisheries, environmental issues and conservation, post-harvest technology, economics and marketing will also be presented by experts from various countries, a release here said.

There will also be an interactive session between scientists, entrepreneurs and government officials in which the Chairman of the Marine Products Export Development Authority, President of the Seafood Exporters Association of India, top officials of banks and insurance companies will participate.

There will also be an exhibition on freshwater prawn culture and the allied industries of processing, feed manufacturing, marketing and other activities, which have come up besides it.

Freshwater prawns have been gaining economic importance in the India, especially in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal.
