E-Governance GIS meet in Hyderabad Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Oct. 1 ANDHRA Pradesh will soon become the first State in the country to allow licensed surveyors from the private sector to work in the updating of land records, a move which will create expertise and save money for the Government. The decision is expected to create a cadre of licensed surveyors who can be drafted by the State, which is already using geographical information systems (GIS) and preparing exhaustive maps, according to Mr G.S. Kumar of GIS India of GeoMap Society, here. The GIS tool would also be used in the upcoming Afro-Asian Games to be held in Hyderabad towards the end of October. Key areas are in asset management and in keeping track of the large number of volunteers and accessing them so that organisation becomes easier. The GIS India, in collaboration with the National Institute of Small Industries Extension and Training (NISIET) is jointly organising `Digital India,' a three-day national conference in Hyderabad to discuss various issues related to the applications and growth of GIS in the country, he told newspersons on Tuesday. The conference would focus on land information systems, linking of rivers, e-Governance, role of private industry and the opportunities for entrepreneurs, students offered by GIS. A special emphasis on the role of GIS in the mega project of linking of Indian rivers is also slated, said Dr D.P. Rao, former Director of the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), here. In the sitingof industries, location of groundwater potential, disaster management, natural resources management etc., the role of GIS is on the increase and India should utilise its potential, he added. The Director of NISIET, Dr Chukka Kondaiah said small scale industry (SSI) should find GIS as a useful tool. The institute was promoting cluster approach for faster development of the small industry and GIS should have an important role in hastening the process. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is a key sponsor, while the NRSA, Census Directorate, Departments of fisheries, land records, civil supplies, pollution control, task force on river linking are expected to participate. A total of 125 delegates, including foreign participants from US, UK, UAE, Iran, Malaysia would take part.
