Keltec integrates titanium gas bottles production

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 5

THE State-owned Kerala Hitech Industries Ltd (Keltec) has integrated the production of titanium gas bottles and SITVC tanks used in PSLV and other satellite launch vehicles.

The first batch of the products has already been handed over to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) here.

Mr Johnson Peter, Managing Director, Keltec, said the titanium gas bottles, used for storing high-pressure helium gas in launch vehicles, were earlier manufactured at three different locations.

The hemisphere pressing was done at BHPV, Hyderabad, machining and welding at Keltec and pressure testing at VSSC. Now Keltec has integrated the process from the raw material to the finished product stage under one roof. He said the company had developed the manufacturing technology for 600 mm, 400 mm and 370 mm diameter bottles. Keltec was now the only source in the country capable of manufacturing titanium gas bottles right from the raw material to the finished stage, he claimed.

Similarly, SITVC tanks used in the launch vehicles were earlier manufactured at various facilities. The fabrication was done at VSSC, aluminium coating at BHEL, Hyderabad, and pressure testing again at VSSC. The Keltec has now integrated the various activities at one place.

Mr Johnson Peter said by carrying out the entire manufacturing at one point, VSSC could save on cost considerably besides being able to rely on better delivery schedules.
