TOURISM Malaysia, General Motors India with its Opel Corsa Sail and Bharat Petroleum, backed by its branded fuel Speed, have announced plans to co-sponsor the JK Tyre Go-Karting championship to be here later this month.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, representatives of all major sponsors and Mr Sanjay Sharma, Head Motor Sports at JK Tyre, said Go-Karting has emerged a lifestyle sport. "By adding a new dimension to our highly successful racing programme, all the track managers over the seven cities will be presented a Formula One Maruti each, allowing the to rear racing talent in their backyards.

"Consequently, track managers from their respective cities will be allowed to send in one driver per round of the national racing championship to be held at Sriperambadur, Chennai. The nominees would get to pit their mettle against the best in the business and maybe if they have it in them to go on to make a name in the international sports arena."

Mr Bhupesh Kumar of Tourism Malaysia, said, "We see increasing tourist traffic between India and Malaysia which has grown from 46,000 in 1999 to about 2,00,000 now. With sponsorship of such events, we expect the number of leisure and business travellers to go up significantly. As we are set to host Formula One race at Sepang race track next year, we are announcing an attractive tourism package for Rs 39,990, that will cover both to and fro airline ticket, three-day stay and a ticket to race."

Mr Amit Dutta, Vice-President, GM, in a statement said: "This is our small step towards a giant leap into motor sports. The Opel Corsa Sail represents the youthfulness and spirit and hence embodies the zest for life attitude.

Go-Karting, which is recognised worldwide as the lifestyle sport and first step towards a motorsports career for any speed enthusiast, has begun to become popular with the masses. JK Tyre has been sponsoring the event since 1997. With regional rounds, the Go-Karting championship will take a pulsating seven-city course culminating in a grand finale in February 2004."
