`Margin trading is risky but useful'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 8

CAPITAL market intermediaries have welcomed the Securities and Exchange Board of India's decision to introduce margin trading in stock markets from February 1, 2004.

"Margin trading is being introduced at the right time when the markets are in good shape. It's a risky but useful product. It is very common in developed markets like the US. It has been in the offing in India for the last 18-24 months," Mr M.K. Doogar, Chairman, Capital Markets Committee of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), told Business Line here.

Even while hailing the decision, some intermediaries felt that "margin trading" would have little impact on retail investors.
