Hyderabad , Jan. 8

YET another corporate hospital is all set to go operational in Hyderabad, which is fast emerging as the medicare capital of India. The Rs 60-crore, Phase-I of the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in the heart of the city would be formally launched by the Union Minister for Health, Ms Sushma Swaraj, on January 11.

KIMS is a venture driven by the entrepreneurship of eight leading specialist doctors from different disciplines. Their efforts are backed by financial support from the Bollineni Group of Hospitals, one of the main promoters. The Andhra Bank and GE Capital have also provided loans, explained Dr S. Sahariah, Vice-Chairman.

These eight doctors, who are members of the Board of Directors would hold equity and be part of the management think-tank. They are backed with more than 40 other specialists who would be providing the medical expertise in the Phase-I of KIMS, which would be a 134-bedded, multi-speciality hospital, Dr Sahariah, a well-known kidney transplant surgeon told Business Line.

Cardiology, nephrology, orthopaedics care and paediatrics would be the four main areas of expertise on offer. These would be supplemented in treatment facilities in all the major departments of medicine.

KIMS has come up on a 5-acre land and the erstwhile Hotel Deccan Continental. The promoters, acquired the hotel property and remodelled it to suit the requirements of the hospital at an investment of nearly Rs 23 crore, the Vice-Chairman said.

Having completed Phase-I in a year, KIMS will take up Phase-II on a 5-acre land within the campus at an estimated expenditure of Rs 90 crore spread over two years. The 350-bed hospital, would be a separate 8-storey building with 3 lakh sqft area, and is expected to be operational by early 2006.

Once completed, the entire KIMS project would cost around Rs 150 crore and have a bed strength of nearly 500.

In addition to providing treatment facilities to people in the State and neighbouring ones, KIMS has plans to attract people from neighbouring countries. Already a couple of patients from Afghanistan have come for treatment, Dr Sahariah said.
