Plea for passport office in Mangalore

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has requested the Union Government to set up a full-fledged passport office in Mangalore.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, the KCCI President, Mr R.D. Kini, stated that passport collection centre in Mangalore only accepts the application forms and sends them to the passport office in Bangalore for processing.

More than 60 per cent of applications at Bangalore passport office are from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, and people will have to travel all the way to Bangalore to get passport on emergency, he said.

The former KCCI President, Mr Subbayya Shetty, said that the passport office in Bangalore received 34,258 applications from the region in 2001.

Mr William D'Souza, who has been nominated by KCCI as liaison officer in this regard, stated that KCCI members are ready to provide infrastructure for setting up the office in Mangalore.
