Naidu lays foundation for IMG Bharata Academy

Hyderabad , Feb.11

THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Wednesday, laid the foundation stone for the Rs 700-crore IMG Bharata Academy set to come up on a 400-acre site at Gachibowli, near the recently developed Swarnadhra Pradesh Sports Complex.

The International Management Group (IMG), which specialises in sporting related activities and runs several sports academies across the world, had last year entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Andhra Pradesh Government to establish an academy both to promote sports activities and create world-class training facilities.

The Chairman of IMG Bharata, Mr Andrew K. Kreiger, said that the IMG group was thankful to the State Government and Mr Naidu in particular for extending support for the dream sports management project. "We will make efforts to see that the academy would turn out to be a technological model for the rest of Asia. It is proposed to host the 2007 World Military Games at Gachibowli wherein representatives from about 130 countries would participate. IMG would help India bid to host the 2020 Olympics."

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that the State had invested about Rs 150 crore to create the infrastructure ahead of the 32nd National Games in 2002 and the Afro Asian Games in 2003. The State Government would continue to focus on developing sports discipline and the world-class infrastructure created over the years would help the State sports enthusiasts, particularly the youth.

"The IMG decided to chose Hyderabad as its destination for entire Asia. We were impressed by the interest and dedication of the State Chief Minister. We ignored other contenders who had offered land free of cost and preferred Hyderabad as we felt that this would be ideally suited," Mr Kreiger said.
