Trends AP farmers plan stir for hike in compensation Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Feb. 24 SEVEN thousand farmers are planning to lay siege to the Collectorate here on Wednesday seeking enhancement of compensation for lands acquired for the proposed special economic zone (SEZ) at Atchyuthapuram in Visakhapatnam district from Rs 2.75 lakhs per acre to Rs 4 lakhs. At a press conference here on Monday, Mr Ch. Narasinga Rao, CPM State Secretariat member leading the agitation, said the Government had issued an order recently fixing the compensation at Rs 2.75 lakh per acre causing resentment among farmers. The Government had released Rs 40 crore in a hurry for the purpose in view of the elections, he alleged. He said the issue had been hanging fire for more than two years and after protracted negotiations the Government had thought it fit to peg the compensation at Rs 2.75 lakhs. He said it was grossly inadequate and further the Government had not addressed several related issues such as compensation for trees and building on the land to be acquired. The Government had identified more than 9,000 acres in the Atchyuthapuram mandal for the proposed SEZ and for the past two years farmers were losing heavily.
