`Dairy sector must increase productivity'

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , March 24

THERE is a huge opportunity in improvement of productivity levels in the dairy sector in India. Despite being a major producer of milk and vegetables, productivity levels continue to be very low, according to Mr Xavier Bertrand of the Trade Commission of France in Mumbai.

Addressing a seminar-cum-business meeting on Wednesday, he said that there is little scope for processing of dairy products since there is hardly any surplus.

The meeting was organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry to interact with a French delegation.

"Why do French companies keep on coming to India? Because, there are more and more opportunities in agriculture and food processing segments," Mr Bertrand said.

"In Andhra Pradesh, we are looking at dairy, horticulture, fruits, fisheries and poultry."

Citing the example of a dairy project that was to come up with French assistance, about seven years ago, he said that the project was a non-starter since promoters feared that there would not be any takers for the products.

"But the situation has changed. The good news is that there is demand for value-added products now."
