Resource management set-up in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Board, Mr V. Ramachandran, will on Wednesday inaugurate Natural Resources Management Council, a grouping of NGOs, Government departments and other agencies engaged in the nurturing and management of natural resources.
An initiative of the Centre for Gandhian Studies at the University of Kerala and coordinated by the Gandhi Centre for Rural Development (GCRD Swadeshi Trust), the NRM Council will seek to coordinate work pertaining to conservation and stocking of water, upkeep of environment, identification of energy resources for the rural sector and their commissioning across the State.
According to Dr Jacob Pulikkan, Director, Centre for Gandhian Studies, the Council also intends to conduct training courses on rainwater harvesting programmes, construction of check dams and ferro-cement tanks for rainwater storage. It will conduct mass contact programmes on water literacy, storing of water and charging of aquifers and on various means of optimisation of its usage and reuse.
