`Corporate boards must have more women'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , April 7

CORPORATE India should have more women representation in their boards, according to Ms Lalita Gupte, Joint Managing Director, ICICI Bank Ltd.

Addressing the annual session of the Confederation of Indian Industry (Northern Region), Ms Gupte highlighted that women brought in diverse skills to the organisation and were a critical force for sustaining its development.

Even though they account for about 50 per cent of India's population, their representation in corporate boards is very low. "We have to remove the glass ceiling. People are looking for equal opportunities by employers. There is gender discrimination and lack of commitment among many corporates to encourage women participation in senior management functions", she said.
