`Educate public about ground water laws in Kerala'

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , April 13

A SPECIAL effort must be made to ensure that the public do not have any doubts about the ground water laws in the State, said Mr T.M. Jacob, the State Minister for Water Resources.

The Minister made these remarks while addressing a meeting of district officers and other officials of the ground water department, says an official press release.

According to the release, Mr Jacob stressed that laws intended to protect the State's ground water resources must not become a bother to the common man. Officials of the department must make a concerted attempt to ensure this, he added.

There is no ban in the State on digging of wells for domestic purposes, the Minister said. Similarly, no permit is required for domestic wells and open wells used for domestic purposes do not have to be registered with the authorities, he added. In some parts of the State excessive exploitation of groundwater resources had led to a fall in the water table, the Minister said. It is in order to prevent further exploitation of groundwater resources in these areas, that the Government is framing laws on groundwater usage, he explained.

According to the release, the Minister said the ground water department must keep pace with the changes in the world around, and must play an active role in managing the State's ground water resources.
