Thomas Cook India to open offices abroad

These offices would be managed out of India as there were similarities in the operational style of these countries.

Mumbai , April 14

IN an effort to spread its wings across the Indian Ocean Rim region and the SAARC nations, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd plans to open offices in Pakistan, Seychelles, Maldives and Bangladesh.

According to Mr Ashwini Kakkar, CEO & Managing Director, these offices would be managed out of India as there were similarities in the operational style of these countries. The regional and cultural similarities, it was felt, would assist in the management of these offices.

In fact, the India operations also lead offices in Egypt where the company has a large retail travel network, with 15 locations in four cities and five foreign exchange bureaus at Cairo and Luxor international airports.

Mr Kakkar told Business Line that India was one of the most profitable operations of Thomas Cook outside Europe and was seen as a location with potential for the future.

As part of its expansion plans in the Indian Ocean Rim region, the travel and financial company acquired the Thomas Cook Overseas (TCO) businesses in Sri Lanka in 2000. TCO is a subsidiary of Thomas Cook Holdings, UK. Thomas Cook (I) Ltd runs the operation as an ongoing business under the TCIL umbrella. The company offers foreign exchange services at the Bhandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. The company also launched operations in Mauritius in the same year.
