Mangalore , May 6

VIGYAN Rail, the 12-coach science exhibition-on-wheels of the Department of Science and Technology, highlighted the development and achievements of India in science and technology, agriculture, defence and various other sectors, in Mangalore on Thursday. Vigyan Rail is entering Karnataka for the first time.

Efforts have been made in the Vigyan Rail to portray the achievements of most of the government departments.

The coach of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) welcomes the visitors with a slogan, "We split atoms for the progress and prosperity of the country." The DAE has made an effort to depict how best the atomic energy could be used for development purposes.

The department claims that radioisotopes as tracers could help detect leakages in buried pipeline and industrial plantations.

The Department of Telecommunication has focussed its attention on highlighting telecom revolution in India. Visitors can also have a glimpse of early telephone models at the coach.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation and Indian Space Research Organisation have exhibited their successful models in their respective coaches.

Officials on the Vigyan Rail told Business Line that the extensive railway network has been effectively used to popularise science and technology among people. The train has 12 exhibition coaches and seven supporting coaches. Twenty-four officials and other supporting staff are on the train.

People of Bangalore can visit Vigyan Rail from May 10. It will be stationed there for eight days. The train will halt in Hubli for three days from May 18.

According to the original schedule, Vigyan Rail is expected to complete its journey with a five-day exhibition at Delhi-Safdarjung from August 16. Officials said that four-month extension is likely for the exhibition.
