Society & Development Fair & Lovely Foundation launches Project Shiksha Our Bureau
Mumbai, May 14 THE Fair & Lovely Foundation has announced Project Shiksha, an initiative in the area of education and enterprise for women. This is one of the several projects undertaken by the Fair & Lovely Foundation, which seeks to encourage economic empowerment of women. In association with the Pune-based voluntary organisation, Vanasthali Rural Development Centre (VRDC), Project Shiksha aims to train women from disadvantaged backgrounds in becoming Balwadi (children's school) teachers. Post- training, these women, with help from VRDC, can start their own Balwadis, which will give them an opportunity to earn. A 6-month course across eight districts of Maharashtra - Satara, Nasik, Nagar, Sangli, Solapur, Latur, Pune & Kolhapur - started in April. Each batch has around 25 women in the age group of 17-35 years. The Fair & Lovely Foundation will take on the entire expense towards running the course including the training of 750 women students across the districts. The VRDC President, Ms Nirmala Purandare, said, "Our organisation was set up in 1981 with the definite aim to work for the welfare of women and children in villages, and we strongly feel that education is the only means to break the vicious circle of poverty and ignorance. With Project Shiksha, we are definitely moving closer to our goal." Mr Vivek Rampal, Category Head (Skin Care), Hindustan Lever Ltd, said, "We are certain that we will be able to make a significant difference to the lives of many women with this new initiative." The Fair & Lovely Foundation seeks to encourage economic empowerment of Indian women through information and resources in the areas of education, career and enterprise. Comprising an advisory body of leading women and professionals, this foundation has undertaken various projects and initiatives in keeping with its vision of taking women to a brighter future.
