Education e-textbooks for Kerala high school students soon Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , May 28 AS part of its efforts to create greater IT awareness among school children in Kerala, the State's Department of Education will soon launch animated e-textbooks, says the latest edition of the Kerala IT Mission newsletter. Developed under the aegis of the IT@School initiative, the e-textbooks are targeted at high school students in the State. The e-textbooks, which will deal with science subjects and also the social sciences, will use animations instead of conventional diagrams. This is expected to give students a better and more lasting understanding of the topics being discussed. Each animated segment will also have links to Web sites related to that topic. The State's Department of Education has already launched an initiative that makes it possible for students to download free of cost from the Internet all textbooks of class 10. Besides, the Education Department has also initiated steps to conduct examinations for certain subjects on computers for students of class 9 and class 10. Meanwhile, the Kerala State Public Works Department is in the process of establishing its presence online. A Web site for the department is being developed, says the IT Mission's newsletter. As part of its e-governance initiatives, the Public Works Department is also setting up an intranet for its officials and an extranet for its contractors, the newsletter adds. The intranet is expected to facilitate activities such as file processing, transfer and so on, while the extranet will help provide a link between the department and its contractors.
