Thiruvananthapuram , May 30 THE Centre has sanctioned Rs 7.79 crore for the development of a tourism circuit in the Malabar region. This grant is expected to give a boost to Kerala Tourism's efforts to promote Malabar as a tourist destination. According to a tourism industry executive, the Rs 7.79-crore grant will be used to fund several projects targeted at developing the tourism infrastructure in the State's northern districts. Tourism projects that will be implemented using this grant include the construction of two houseboat terminals in Kasaragod district, boat jetties at Payyannur and Azhikal in Kannur district and several floating jetties at other locations. Besides, the grant will also be used to improve wayside tourist facilities in Wayanad district and add more amenities for pilgrims visiting the Guruvayoor temple near Thrissur. Another project that will be funded using this grant is a `heritage conservation and protection' initiative at Kalpathy in Palakkad district. In addition, Kerala Tourism has also initiated projects such as development of backwater tourism in Kasaragod district and the `dream city' project in Kozhikode. Kerala Tourism is also working with the State's Department of Archaeology on the conservation of three forts in Kasaragod district. This initiative, which is expected to cost around Rs 90 lakh, will be carried out in two phases. The Department of Tourism has budgeted Rs 2 crore for the conservation of forts and monuments at Thalassery, Bekal and Kannur. Similarly, the two departments are also working together to preserve several Jain temples in Wayanad.
