Tea Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Increasing global demand seen reviving tea exports Our Bureau
Coimbatore , June 1 NOTWITHSTANDING the squeeze in the tea supply position (owing to the decline in the South Indian tea crop for the fourth year in a row), industry insiders foresee a revival in exports because of rising international demand. The UPASI Tea Committee Chairman, Mr D.P. Maheshwari, said tea exports from India were higher by 7.3 million kg between January and March 2004, compared to Sri Lankan and Kenyan exports during the same period. The total exports from South during the first three months of the current calendar year stood at 20.8 mkg, a 53 per cent rise. Total crop production estimated at 180 mkg in 2004. South Indian ouput was at 193.4 mkg in 2003. UPASI had estimated a 19.9 per cent decline in the South Indian production between January and April . The April crop was expected to be lower by 18 per cent, but the decline was by 25 per cent, Mr Maheshwari said. The regionwise production details indicate a slip of 42 per cent in the High Ranges (Munnar) followed by Nilgiris, a 39 per cent fall, Central Travancore (Vandiperiyar) crop production fell by 28 per cent and Anamallais (Valparai) by 10 per cent. The decline in yield levels has been attributed to the acute drought situation.
