NGO unveils initiative for informal labourers

Our Bureau

Bangalore , June 8

MAYA (Movement for Alternatives and Youth Awareness), a Bangalore-based NGO, today launched LabourNet, an institutional network of informal sector workforce and related markets.

The initiative seeks to build collective enterprises of the working poor. According to Mr Solomon J.P., Director, MAYA, "Informal labour constitutes 90 per cent of the workforce and we intend to provide a framework for them to interact with the market in a mutually beneficial manner."

LabourNet will initially address the problems of the construction industry workforce such as unskilled and heterogeneous labour force, lack of continuous work, no training opportunities, total dependence of the workers on middlemen and lack of social security. The industry too faces problems such as dependence on the `maistri' and low quality of work from unskilled workers.

Through LabourNet, MAYA will formalise the engagement of workers by the industry. This will be done through labour co-ordinators, identified by the NGO, who will help in identifying and enrolling the workers with MAYA. The NGO is in the process of setting up a call centre to answer the queries of the industry and fulfil their workforce needs. On receiving calls from the industry, the call centre would direct the labour co-ordinators to mobilise the workforce at the project site.
