New Delhi , June 11

THE Petroleum Secretary, Mr B.K. Chaturvedi, has been named the new Cabinet Secretary, cutting short the tenure of Mr Kamal Pande, who had been appointed by the previous NDA Government for a period of two years till October 31, 2004.

Mr Chaturvedi, an Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer of 1966 batch, will assume charge on Monday. Mr Pande, who has already crossed the age of superannuation, has been moved to the Inter-State Council Secretariat as Secretary in the rank and pay of the Cabinet Secretary till October 31 this year.

In the process, the Congress-led UPA coalition Government has departed from a convention that the Cabinet Secretary appointee joins the Cabinet Secretariat as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for a month before the incumbent retires. This practice was intended to ensure a smooth transition at the top bureaucratic post.

Sources said that the Government has also finalised at least seven new secretary-level appointments and the announcement would be made early next week.
