The Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers Association (IEEMA) has urged the Union Government to peg the import duties on raw materials used by the domestic electrical industry at the same level of those imposed on finished electrical goods being imported into the country.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, IEEMA President, Mr P. Krishnakumar, said that the import duty concessions given to imported equipment in the last Budget without corresponding duty concessions to raw materials used by the domestic industry was affecting the local industry. The domestic electrical supplies have become uncompetitive vis-à-vis imported material because the "import duty on raw material is higher than that imposed on finished goods."
IEEMA also sought withdrawal of 10 per cent import duty on equipment imported for transmission and distribution projects, abolition of various local taxes and review of free trade agreements to take care of the domestic industry.
