World Tourism council meet in Hyderabad

THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will inaugurate the 73rd Executive Council meeting of World Tourism Organisation (WTO) here on Thursday.

The three-day meeting is being held after a gap of 21 years in India. Tourism Ministers and top officials from 40 member countries are expected to attend the meeting.

The meeting will discuss issues such as making the organisation into a specialised agency of the United Nations and changing the English acronym (as it resembled that of World Trade Organisation).

Announcing this here at a press conference on Tuesday, Ms J Geeta Reddy, Minister of Tourism (Andhra Pradesh), said the Council meeting would discuss the sustainable tourism-elimination of poverty.

She said the initiative, a joint programme taken up with United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, aimed at development of poor countries through tourism.

"This focuses on the twin objective of sustainable tourism and alleviation of poverty," she said.

She said the organisation helped the State develop a master plan to transform the tourism industry. "They suggested us to develop theme-based tourism, circular tourism concept and infrastructure," the Minister said.

The two-day session would be followed by a seminar on `Destination marketing' on July 10,
