Customs house agents' strike hits garment exporters

Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 20

EXPORT consignment of garments worth Rs 450 crore has been held up in the Delhi Airport because of the ongoing strike by the Customs House Agents for the past six days.

The President, Delhi Garment Manufacturers Association, Mr Mago, expressing dismay at the strike by the agents, said it was taking a toll on garment exporters.

Mr Mago told Business Line that the agents were unhappy over the lack of adequate infrastructure at the airports in handling export cargo as a result of which the customs clearance work got delayed. They have been striking work for almost six days with no solution in sight.

Echoing the same sentiment, Mr Hari Kapoor, President, Apparel Exporters and Manufacturers Association, here said that normally garments were sent by air only when there are shipment problems in the country's ports and if there is any further undue delay in airlifting the export cargo to the destinations, the orders would get cancelled, putting the exporters to inconvenience.

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) Chairman, Mr A. Sakthivel, also voiced concern over the continued detention of garment export cargo meant for overseas markets because of the flash strike at the airports in Delhi.

He hoped that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) would expeditiously find a resolution to the issues raised by the customs house agents by beefing up security and more security-related appurtenances at the airport for faster clearance of export consignments.
