THE Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry's proposal of setting up an independent regulator and piloting a new Broadcast Bill has prompted the board of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) to set up a sub-committee to look into broadcasting issues.
The sub-committee will have IBF Chairman and CEO of Prasar Bharati, Mr K.S. Sarma, Star Chief, Mr Peter Mukerjea, Sony Entertainment Television's (SET) Managing Director, Mr Kunal Dasgupta, Zee Telefilms Vice-Chairman, Mr Jawahar Goel, TV Today's Mr G. Krishnan, BBC India's Mr Vinod Bakshi and Sahara's Mr Mahesh Prasad.
According to sources, this committee will not only interface with the Government, but will also take a view on certain critical issues.
Besides this, the IBF board on Tuesday also discussed the issue of service tax payable by the advertisers. It had shot off letters to advertisers asking them to bear with the service tax.
However, some of the big spenders were not willing to cough up the additional 10 per cent service tax and wanted it to be built into the deal. While certain broadcasters have managed to negotiate deals with the service tax component built in, others have not been able to do so.
