IPR IPR, patenting training for women scientists Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Aug. 15 WOMEN qualified in the sciences have one new avenue to specialise intellectual property rights (IPR). There is good potential for trained women scientists to start self-employed enterprise or find suitable employment with patent attorney firms, says the patent facility centre (PFC) of the Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC). The PFC has recently launched a one-year specialised programme to train women scientists in the nitty-gritty of patenting and IPR issues. It will provide scholarship for the selected women and put them through various training programmes. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), under which the PFC operates has initiated a Women Scientists Scholarship Scheme. It aims to utilise the potential of women qualified in science and technology by giving them opportunities for practising their knowledge, according to a TIFAC report. Utilising this scheme, the PFC has taken 20 women from all over the country in the first batch. It has also approached a number of agencies, including law firms and Government Department's in helping it provide training. Some of them are S. Majumdar & Co, Kolkata; Lall Lahiri & Salhotra, Gurgaon; Anand & Anand, New Delhi; Lakshmi Kumaran & Sridharan, New Delhi; The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Evalueserve. Com, Gurgaon: Unit for Research & Development of Information Products (URDIP), CSIR, Pune and the TIFAC. The Union Government has taken up a massive programme to modernise the entire patent network in the country. Trained personnel in IPR are required to man the facilities to the upgraded and created.
