Dabur Foods targets Rs 5-cr profit; pins hopes on fruit juices

Kolkata , Aug. 18

DABUR Foods Ltd aims to net Rs 5 crore profit in this fiscal against the Rs 1.46 crore earned in 2003-04.

The company has registered Rs 1.16 crore profit in the first quarter of this fiscal.

A senior Dabur Foods official said that much of the growth was expected to be contributed by the `Real' fruit juice brand.

"We are expecting the fruit juice segment to grow beyond 50 per cent compared to 36 per cent last year."

He said that increasing consciousness among the rich and upper middle classes about health issues was helping the fruit juices segment and fruit beverage market as such.

"In fact, we guess, there is a fall in the sale of aerated drinks, which is contributing further to the expansion of the domestic fruit beverage market."

While the corporate plan visualises Rs 200 crore turnover in 2006-07 against the Rs 86 crore achieved in 2003-04, the official said that the target could be reached by 2005-06.

Having commissioned its processing plant near Siliguri in West Bengal this month, the company has decided not to make any major investment till the accumulated loss of Rs 21 crore was wiped off.

Asked whether the company, currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dabur India, would like to tap the market in the future, Mr Sharma said, "All such possibilities of corporate restructuring have been postponed" till the loss is taken care of.

In the meantime, the company has begun experimenting with new ideas. "Our Homemade brand is one such experiment," he said.

"The fruit processing industry is yet to understand the range of preference of the Indian consumer. More so because the consumer taste here varies from region to region. A perfect case point is the pickle industry where regional brands rule the roost," the official said, adding that Dabur Foods would not enter such segments.
