Karnataka State Highways may be upgraded

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Aug. 20

THE Union Minister for Surface Transport, Mr T.R. Baalu, will soon discuss the issue of upgrading State highways in Karnataka into national highways.

The Union Minister of State for Surface Transport and Highways, Mr K.H. Muniappa, told presspersons in Mangalore on Thursday that Mr Baalu may hold discussions on issues related to Karnataka either at Belgaum or Hubli.

When Mr Muniappa was told about the damage to National Highway No. 17 at Maravanthe in Udupi district due to sea erosion, he said that a 700-metre-long seawall would be built at a cost of Rs 5 crore at Maravanthe beach.

The seawall will protect the highway from sea erosion.

The Central Water Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune, has been asked to study the damage to NH 17 at Maravanthe, he said, adding that work on the seawall construction will begin after the receipt of the CWPRS report.

The Union Minister of State for Programme Implementation and Statistics, Mr Oscar Fernandes, and the Udupi MP, Ms Manorama Madhwaraj, have also brought this matter to his notice, he said.

Mr Fernandes has also written to him about the need for widening the road between Surathkal and Kundapur.
