Essential drugs

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority Rulings and Drug Policy implementation during the last two decades as regards essential drugs have not prevented pharmaceutical companies from being globally competitive. Pharmaceutical companies should realise their social obligations to economically weaker sections of the society in providing essential drugs.

Price control should not be based on average past costs. Pricing policies of essential and non-essential drugs need to be investigated and the pricing formulae for essential drugs should be evolved taking into account future costs and savings.
