Roadways Industry & Economy - SSI Sisspa urges early end to truckers' stir Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Aug. 26 THE South India Small Spinners Association (Sisspa) has asked the Centre and the State government to urgently intervene to bring to an end the truckers' strike, which it says has hampered the movement of cotton and the cotton yarn produced by the spinning industry. The strike has almost paralysed both the procurement of raw cotton and sale of yarn triggering a crisis situation for the textile mills. The Sisspa President, Mr R. Chinnaiyan, felt the suggestion by some of the truck operators associations that the transport agencies/booking agents could collect the service tax from the consignee-trade and industries was unjust and could not be accepted. Sisspa is opposed to such suggestion, a statement added. Cotton arrivals from Karnataka hit: In the meantime, cotton trade sources say the truckers agitation has hit the movement of the cotton kapas from Karnataka where some quantity of new crops - DCH-32 and MECH-1 varieties - have started arriving into the market. Similarly, the inter-state movement of kappas cotton from Maharashtra is also severely restricted by the strike. The textile mills seeking to replenish their cotton stocks are hurt in the process, the sources added.
