SME clusters in AP commended

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Aug. 26

CLUSTER approach is essential for the development of small and medium enterprises in the country in view of the increasing competition in the domestic and export markets, Mr M. Gopalakrishna, the Chairman of the AP State Financial Corporation, has said.

At a seminar on the revitalisation of SMEs organised by the AP chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Thursday, he said the SMEs should co-operate internally and compete externally in the present globalised market.

"Small-scale units account for 35 per cent of the exports now and their share can be increased, if greater synergy is achieved by adopting a cluster approach," he said.

As in the United States of America, the SMEs should take "the partnership, alliances and linkages route" to survive and thrive in the present market, he suggested. Mr Ramesh Datla said the CII would strive to help the smaller units in every possible way by providing them with the requisite technologies, information and market intelligence.

Mr Raghu Ponnapalli, the Managing Director, Xinthe Technologies, urged the SMEs to invest in information technology and discard the notion that it was too expensive for them.

"In fact, by careful application of IT, many of the problems faced by SMEs can be solved easily and the investment can be recouped quickly," he said. He said his company was specialising in IT application for the smaller units.

Mr C.V.S. Suri, the Chairman of the Visakhapatnam zone of CII, said the importance of SMEs could not be overemphasised in the Indian context in view of their potential for employment generation.
