Neha Kaushik

New Delhi , Sept. 2

LEADING auto components maker, Hi-Tech Gears, along with its US partner Getrag Gears, is jointly developing components for supply to General Motors.

Though declining to provide more details about the project, Mr Deep Kapuria, Chairman and Managing Director of Hi-Tech Gears, told Business Line that the project was currently in the prototyping stage and that the products should be ready by 2006.

In another initiative, Hi-Tech Gears is partnering with Getrag to set up an international purchasing office in the country.

"Getrag sources about $1.1 billion worth of components annually, mainly out of Eastern Europe. The sourcing would be done of components such as aluminium castings from tier-2 suppliers based in India," Mr Kapuria said. The companies are currently conducting a market study, which should be completed by the end of September, to assess the feasibility.

Getrag is an approximately $3.2 billion transmissions major.

Meanwhile, Hi-Tech Gears, which is a leading exporter of parts to Cummins, is bullish about the global opportunities for the company and is eyeing exports worth about Rs 25 crore this year.
