Airlines Govt may extend limited open sky policy next fiscal Ashwini Phadnis
New Delhi , Sept. 3 THE Government is considering a proposal to extend the period during which the `limited open sky' policy would remain in force during 2005-06. Official sources told Business Line that during 2005-06, the Government could follow an open sky policy for seven months from September to March. The Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, told the Rajya Sabha on August 24 that the Government had taken a decision to follow a limited open sky policy between November 1 and March 31, 2005. He added that the guidelines to be followed would be similar to the policy announced in 2003-04. During 2003-04, the Government followed a limited open sky policy between December and February during which international airlines were allowed to either operate additional flights or fly larger aircraft into India to ensure that passengers were not inconvenienced. The policy was open to airlines of all regions, including the Gulf, and was initially to remain in force till February this year, but the Government allowed it to continue till April. The decision considerably helped ease problems of air travellers with international airlines, adding more than 2,20,000 seats during the period the policy was in force, official sources said.
