Kerala govt to seek time on pollution front

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has decided to approach a Supreme Court committee for grant of additional time for its industries to fall in line with hazardous wastes treatment norms.

The Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, will write to the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee on Hazardous Wastes in this regard, an official spokesman announced here. This was decided at a conference of industries associations convened by the Chief Minister late on Tuesday evening. The conference had been called in the backdrop of closure notices served on 198 industries for non-compliance with the Hazardous Waste Rules framed by the State Pollution Control Board.

The Chief Minister told the meeting that the Government could not help but go ahead with implementing the court directives demanding compliance with the relevant rules. However, it would be favourably disposed to their approaching either the High Court or the Supreme Court seeking a reasonably extended time limit for setting up hazardous waste management facilities.
