Kovalam beach cleaned up

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of the observation of the International Coast Clean-up Day, the famed Kovalam beach here witnessed frenetic activity on Saturday.

A team comprising more than 60 Coast Guard personnel and volunteer organisations such as the Kovalam unit of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association, Zero Waste-Kovalam, Eureka Sports Club and Vizhinjam, and students from various schools got into the act to clean up the entire length of the Light House Beach, the Hawa Beach and the Kovalam beach.

The Deputy Commandant, Mr O. G. Kutty, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Station, Vizhinjam, led the clean-up team, which rid the beach of massive junk and ensured its safe disposal. The aim of the operation was to educate the local people on the hazards of coastal pollution and remedial measures, an official spokesman said.
