Trade & Labour Unions No solution in sight to Ashok Leyland unit's strike M. Ramesh
Chennai , Sept. 25 ONE full month after workers at Ashok Leyland's Hosur-I unit struck work, there is no solution in sight. Hosur-I produces 175 engines and 36 trucks/buses a day. The company produces vehicles in other units too, such as Ennore and Alwar, but engines come from Hosur. Engines "are mostly manufactured at Hosur," says Ashok Leyland's Web site. On August 23, when the strike happened, Ashok Leyland said that the company had enough stocks of engines to keep the other units going. Company officials are somewhat reluctant to speak about the current situation, but it is understood from people in the know, that while vehicle production can be enhanced at other centres to make up for the loss of production at Hosur, the supply of engines could be a problem. Sources close to Ashok Leyland said that the company had built up an inventory of engines big enough to last about a month. But beyond the month, lack of engines could affect production at other units.
