Dotz - an ice cream sans the hassles of dripping

Our Bureau

Pune , Oct. 6

HEARD of free flowing ice cream? This is the next generation ice cream that Pune-based Mr Manish Vithalani and his three business partners have developed.

They have come up with the coldest ice cream (it is stored at - 40 degree Celsius) and to make it appealing have made it in the form of dots and appropriately called Dotz.

All that one has to do is dig the spoon into the cup and take a scoopful of spherical balls, pop it into the mouth and eat it as natural as an ice cream.

No more hassles of ice cream dripping out ofspoons or even mouths.

A boon for mothers whose children are fond of ice creams.

Launched in the Pune market for the first time in the country, Dotz is available in 70 gm cup priced between Rs 20 and Rs 30 at select outlets.

The company, Space Dots Foods Pvt Ltd,would be retailing Dotz in about 30 outlets in Pune. Later it would sell Dotz in Mumbai in 15 outlets.

Within a span of six months, another seven metros across the country would be covered . The company is expecting a turnover of about Rs 5 crore from this product by March 2006.

Pune is the second place in the world where Dotz is being manufactured with the other location being in the US.

"We have patented the process. Dotz is made by a company in the US called Drippin Dots and we are the only other company to have developed this technology," Mr Vithalani, Director of the company, says.

The technology that has gone behind this new product is cryogenic technology (used in rockets) and the dots are flash frozen to maintain the individual dot consistency and locks in the flavour.

Since the ice cream is stored at - 40 degree Celsius, no bacteria can survive.

Dotz is an in-house product of Space Foods and is the result of a two-year development process, which took in an investment of close to Rs 1.5 crore.

The company has its manufacturing unit at Hadapsar in Pune, which has been set up with an investment of Rs 1.5 crore and has a production capacity of 300 kg per day, if the unit works at eight hours.

Mr Vithalani noted that if the demand was high, the capacity could be increased to produce 300 kg of ice cream per hour.

Dotz is currently available in eight flavours, vanilla, strawberry, mango, butterscotch, black currant, lime n' lemon, mint and chocolate.

The ice cream has about 14 per cent fat as compared to the range of five to 11 per cent usually observed in the ice creams, so weight watchers would have to take a second look.
