UK bodies to train SME entrepreneurs

Our Bureau

Kolkata. Oct. 12

THE British Executive Service Overseas (BESO) and its sister agency, Voluntary Service Organisation (VSO), are to undertake a major skill development and training programme for entrepreneurs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Delhi.

The organisations will soon carry out a survey to identify the potential SME sectors in the five states.

Addressing members of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the International Director of BSEO, Mr Issac Hagan, said here on Tuesday that the projects would be taken up in collaboration with local bodies.

"We are already working with a number of chambers of commerce and organisations and may tie up with the newly formed Indian Professional Services Organisation (IPSO) for our future projects."

A voluntary development agency, the BESO maintains a large pool of professionals, who volunteer to enhance technical and managerial skills in the SME sector in 40 countries.

Talking on the common problems of the SME sector worldwide, Mr Hagan said that roughly 50 per cent SME initiatives fizzled out in less than three years.
