THE Government has projected a quantum jump in coal production by Coal India Ltd (CIL) by 2011-12, which is the last year of the Eleventh Five Year Plan.
The target for CIL has been placed at 445 million tonnes, which is more than 50 per cent increase compared to the present production level of around 300 million tonnes annually, according to an official release.
A major share of the proposed production is expected from new mines to be developed by the public sector undertaking over the next couple of years. According to estimates, the existing mines will account for around 17.43 mt, another 135.87 mt would be mined from projects that are already complete.
While ongoing projects will contribute another 45.85 mt of coal by 2011-12, new mines that are expected to be developed during this period would provide for another 245.85 mt.
CIL has identified 99 projects to be taken up during Tenth Plan period including 27 projects with investments of Rs 100 crore and above each.
