Trade & Labour Unions Ashok Leyland's Hosur unit strike called off M Ramesh
Chennai , Oct. 24 ASHOK Leyland's management has made peace with the striking labourers at its Hosur-I unit. "The strike has been called off and the labourers will be resuming work tomorrow (Monday)," Mr J.N. Amrolia, Executive Director - HR, Ashok Leyland, told Business Line today. He said that the company had agreed to give wage increases of around Rs 3,500 per month. In return, the Unions have agreed to raise production without any additional manpower. Engines production will go up from 154 a day to 240 a day; vehicle production will rise from 36 to 44, Mr Amrolia said. "I am looking forward to meeting the surging market demand with improved output as a result of the settlement," Mr R. Seshasayee, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland, told Business Line. The end to the strike comes exactly two months after it began. It was on August 23 that the workers put down their tools. Hosur-I feeds engines to vehicle production at the company's other plants too. Anticipating the strike Ashok Leyland had built up a larger inventory of Hino engines, so that the loss of production of vehicles at Hosur could be, to some extent, compensated by more production at other plants. Despite this, production of vehicles in September fell to 3,854 units against 4,549 units in September last year. It is understood that during the two months of the strike, Ashok Leyland had endeavoured to produce more of vehicles with Leyland engines. Vehicles with the (more preferred) Hino engines were also produced in small numbers, as a few Hino engines were still being produced at Hosur-I with the help of executives. It is not clear as to what extent the two-months' production shortfall could be made up for by increased productivity. "We will be utilising our capacity fully," commented Mr Amrolia.
