Outlook Canon India targets home theatre market Our Bureau
Bangalore , Oct. 25 HAVING positioned its projector as a home theatre system through a tie-up with Onkyo, electronics major Canon India is eyeing the huge home theatre market in India. Canon is looking to capitalise on its first mover advantage since it is the first company that has marketed its projector as a home theatre device. Essentially, the 5-in-1 home cinema system is a Canon projector that can be connected to tele-channels via TV-tuner, access DVD, digital camera, camcorder and laptops. "We realise the potential of the home cinema segment that is growing at a high pace and we think the driving force behind the market is going to be the home projector," Mr Bharadwaj said. For Canon, the primary target is the 29" television owner who is looking at multiple ownerships (purchase of a larger TV or a plasma TV). Priced in the Rs 75,000 to Rs 4 lakh-range, the company aims to take on the likes of Sony and Philips which have launched products for the home theatre market here. "If you look at what's available our package is half the cost of a plasma TV. Even if you were to purchase the (Canon) projector which costs Rs 75,000, the entire package, wherein the consumer buys our projector and Onkyo's system, will work out to Rs 99,000," Mr Alok Bharadwaj, Director and GM, Canon India told Business Line. The company has opened its first Home Cinema Center here to showcase the home theatre system. The Canon Home Cinema Center is a demo centre wherein the end-user can watch-n-feel Canon's home theatre system before deciding on a purchase. By the end of this year, the company plans to set up such centres in major Indian cities. The electronics major already has such demo centres operating in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Singapore.
