ISPs seek meeting with Maran on VPN issue

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 31

AS the controversy surrounding the provision of Virtual Private Network (VPN) services by ISPs heats up, the Internet services providers have sought a meeting with the Minister for IT and Communications, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, to discuss the issue.

"We have sought a meeting with the Minister. There is nothing in the ISP licence that says we cannot provide VPN services. Even the accounting separation includes VPN as part of ISP services," Mr Amitabh Singhal, President of ISP Association of India (ISPAI), said.

The move follows a clarification from Department of Telecom (DoT), which barred ISPs from offering VPN services. Mr Singhal said that the ISPs are awaiting the outcome of the meeting with the Minister to decide on the future course of action.

The fight between state-owned BSNL and ISPs over the issue has been hanging fire for the last few months. The high point came when BSNL stopped offering leased line services to ISPs on grounds that the Internet service providers were misusing the infrastructure to offer services that were beyond the scope of their licence.
